Changes in technology this fall at UAF will enhance teaching success and provide better access to information for faculty and students.

Chancellor Rogers has made a significant commitment to upgrading SMART classrooms. Upgrades took place over the summer in six classrooms, two labs and three auditoriums. The auditoriums have also been equipped with lecture capture capability. For training in use of these enhancements and the use of lecture capture please contact the Office of Information Technology support center at 450-8300. Additional classrooms will be upgraded throughout the year.

Upgraded rooms include:

  • Bunnell 302 and 402

  • Chapman 104 and 106

  • Duckering 406

  • Elvey Auditorium

  • Gruening 208 and 402

  • Reichardt 201A and B, and 204

Other technology news:

  • The UAF Mobile App has been enhanced and includes mobile access to courses within Blackboard. You can also synchronize Blackboard with your Facebook account.

  • Miles of network cabling and rooms of equipment have been upgraded to make the network faster and more reliable.

  • A new Voice over IP telephone system has been installed with a new voicemail system for everyone. Network and VoIP upgrades will continue throughout the next 18 months.

  • In partnership with the UAF Office of Sustainability, OIT has installed power monitoring on 1,300 computers across campus to allow automatic shutdown and power up of computers in an effort to save energy; OIT still has the ability to push updates and anti-virus software remotely.

  • If you happen to forget your power adapter for your mobile device, there are now mobile charging stations in Wood Center and the 24-hour study area in Rasmuson Library.

OIT encourages faculty members to use Blackboard to post syllabi this semester. It is very easy and can be accomplished in about 5 minutes. This will make it possible to always refer students to a single, easy to access location for their class requirements. Information about this and other Blackboard resources is online.

If you are interested in using Blackboard to further enhance or supplement your classroom instruction, please contact the OIT support center to arrange training. Send your suggestions on how OIT can improve resources, service and support to ua-cito@alaska.edu.
