A panel of Alaska historians, journalists and leaders will join members of the community to discuss the late Ted Stevens and his place in the state’s history Thursday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus.

The panel discussion is coordinated by the UAF Rasmuson Library and is part of the Ted Stevens Papers Project, an effort to contextualize the thousands of documents generated during the decades that Ted Stevens served the state in public office. Stevens deposited his papers at the Rasmuson Library prior to his death.

“Our goal is to begin a conversation about how this collection will illuminate the senator’s legacy,” says Bridget Burke, the head of the Alaska & Polar Regions Collections at the UAF Rasmuson Library.

UAF faculty members Terrence Cole and Jerry McBeath and Inupiat elder and activist Willie Hensley are panelists, along with Anchorage journalist Michael Carey and Stevens Papers Project archivist Mary Anne Hamblen.

Panelists will share their impression of the Stevens legacy. The panelists’ discussion will be followed by an opportunity for audience members to ask questions. The discussion will be recorded and will join other multimedia Stevens-related recordings online as part of the Stevens Project website.

The event is free and open to the public.
