Three young girls, left to fend for themselves, go their own ways and overcome obstacles in a play opening Feb. 8 for a two-week run at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

"This Girl Laughs, This Girl Cries, This Girl Does Nothing," first produced in 2011, was written by award-winning Australian playwright Finegan Kruckmeyer. Abigail Van Patter, of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, will direct the Theatre UAF production.

The play follows the lives of three sisters born to a loving family that lives simply in the woods. After tragedy takes their mother, their stepmother convinces their poor father to abandon them. Each girl ventures into the world in a different direction.

Actors include Emily Ross, Paloma Polonco, Sarah Williams and Freddy Gryder. Mary Conlin will narrate. The production is entirely designed by UAF students in film and performing arts design.

Actor movements, puppets and projection art create magic on the stage. "I came to theatrical design after years of producing independent dance shows, so working with a director passionate about movement and adventure has been a great experience," said designer Lara Lotze.

The G-rated play is most suitable for ages 8 and older. It runs 60 minutes.

Performances begin at 7 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. on Sundays from Feb. 8-18. The Salisbury Theater is in the Fine Arts Complex, off the Regents' Great Hall, on the Fairbanks campus.

Tickets can be purchased in advance online at www.uaf.edu/theatrefilm/. Prices, in advance, are $5 for kids, students and SNAP card holders; $10 for seniors, military and UAF staff members; $15 for adults; and $30 for a family four-pack. Tickets are also available by calling the box office at 474-7751. The Feb. 8 production is a pay-what-you-can preview at 7 p.m.
