April 17, 2012
Ann Fears and Chef Flora Deacon of the Rural Nutrition Services Program are featured in the newly released Interior webisode of Traditional Foods, Contemporary Chef that can be viewed online.
The webisode is one of a series developed and produced by the Alaska Native Tribal
Health Consortium’s Wellness and Prevention leaders Dr. Gary Ferguson and Desiree
Bergeron Simeon, who is a registered dietitian and adjunct instructor for RNS. UAF
Honorary PhD-recipient Howard Luke is featured teaching the group about traditional
foods at his Gaalee’ya Spirit Camp on the Tanana River. Chef Deacon, a 2010 graduate
of RNS originally from Grayling, demonstrates a delicious campfire bison roast with
cranberry gravy. Ann Fears, a 2011 RNS graduate, assists with wild food harvest and
composed the theme song for the Store Outside Your Door initiative emphasizing the
healthful bounty of traditional foods.
