Transportation center receives another major grant
February 20, 2015
The Center for Environmentally Sustainable Transportation in Cold Climates will receive
an additional $923,700 from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The center is a consortium that investigates environmental sustainability in transportation
systems, primarily for cold regions. It's led by Jenny Liu, associate professor of
engineering at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Other consortium members are Montana
State University and Washington State University.
The center received its start with $1.4 million in September 2013 and another $1.4
million in May 2014. The new funding will allow CESTiCC to continue its research through
fall 2018.
CESTiCC has awarded 14 projects, through a peer-review process, to engineer environmentally
sustainable transportation infrastructure in cold climates. Matching funds were provided
by its partners, including the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities,
Washington State Department of Ecology, Clear Roads Pooled Fund, and members of private
industries.
The center's research on alternative de-icing methods has been highlighted recently
by Time, Scientific American, the Los Angeles Times, Vox, National Public Radio, The
Seattle Times and other news organizations.
CESTiCC also has participated in the Imagine Tomorrow High School Competition, Kids2College,
Alaska Summer Research Academy, Engineering Open House, UAF Arctic Day and a local
elementary school program on science, technology, engineering and math education.
CESTiCC offers a monthly webinar series, research seminars and presentations to professional
societies and the community. CESTiCC will host the International Symposium on Systematic
Approaches to Environmental Sustainability in Transportation in Fairbanks this coming
August.
