Two student sustainability proposals approved
November 5, 2013
This fall two projects proposed by students that support sustainability initiatives
were funded, totaling nearly $3,700. The student-led R.I.S.E. Board (Review of Infrastructure,
Sustainability and Energy) evaluated the project proposals and forwarded their recommendations
to the Chancellor for approval.
One of the projects enthusiastically supported was "Human-Powered for the Win," providing
bicycle-powered charging stations for a seamless blend of sustainability, improved
learning and wellness. The Northern Studies program will oversee the installation
of two bike-powered generators as part of a multi-impact campaign for improved social
sustainability among public users of the Gruening Building. This project entails the
use of bikes equipped with stabilizers and generators that harness the energy created
by cycling for output to USB chargers.
The value of this project is multi-fold. It increases sustainability by diversifying
power sources on campus, creates visibility for sustainability projects, increases health
and wellness through sustainable methods, and provides access to exercise year-round
creating new and innovative social impact opportunities.
Three times annually the R.I.S.E. Board and the Office of Sustainability accept student
proposals that support sustainability initiatives at UAF. Preference is given to projects
that invest in programs and projects focused on renewable energy and increased energy
efficiency. The goal of the grant program is to endorse promising student ideas for
a more sustainable future.
The next round of proposals are due in February. For information on the proposal process
