UA smoke- and tobacco-free policy faculty fellowship

The UAA smoke- and tobacco-free team is offering a $1,500 summer stipend (inclusive of benefits payment, to be paid by June 30, 2018) for faculty in the UA system to engage in research or creative activity related to UA’s smoke- and tobacco-free policy, now in its second year. The purpose of the project is to raise awareness, educate and engage your campus regarding the policy. Financial support comes from the American Lung Association in Alaska.

Please submit your proposal no later than 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, 2017. Winners will be announced on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017. Apply by sending a one- to two-page proposal that includes the following information:


  • Problem statement: What problem(s) you wish to address related to the smoke- and tobacco-free policy specific to your campus

  • Goal(s), objectives and activities of your proposed project. If you need materials to support the implementation of your project, please describe that in this section.

  • Anticipated outcomes/impact and deliverable(s) of your project.

  • Timeline

The proposed project must be implemented in spring semester 2018 and completed by May 30, 2018. You can request up to $200 for materials related to your project. If requesting materials funding, please discuss this and your justification in your proposal. Project materials costing more than $200 may be funded depending on the need and available resources from the UAA smoke- and tobacco-free team.

A brief one to two-page final report summarizing the results of your project is due by June 15, 2018. Upon completion of your final report, your summer stipend will be disbursed. Proposals will be evaluated based on overall creativity/innovation, completeness of proposal, and impact. Only three faculty applicants will be chosen for this award from the UA system.

Faculty members from various disciplines have participated in the past, including those in physics and astronomy, arts, communication, and English.
