The University of Alaska Fairbanks Ted Stevens Papers Project at Rasmuson Library will commemorate Sen. Ted Stevens’ 90th birthday on Nov. 18, 2013. The public is invited to two events that day. Both will be held on campus at the Rasmuson Library, and parking is free after 5 p.m. The events will be streamed live from http://stevens.library.uaf.edu.
At 5 p.m., Chancellor Brian Rogers and Marie Matsuno Nash, a former aide to Sen. Stevens, will cut a birthday cake. A reception will follow.
At 6 p.m., graduate student Susannah Dowds will give a gallery talk, “Mapping Alaska,” that will focus on the role maps played in the senator’s career.
That day an exhibit, “Mapping Alaska,” will open in the Sen. Ted Stevens Gallery in the Rasmuson Library. The exhibit explores the creative pursuit of navigating the 49th state’s diverse geography through GPS, celestial navigation, photography and cartography and features materials from the library’s Ted Stevens Papers collection. It will run through spring 2014.
The public is also invited to “sign” an online birthday card by posting a memory or appreciation of the senator at http://library.uaf.edu/blogs/senator-stevens-ninety/.
The Ted Stevens Papers Project at Rasmuson Library, measuring nearly 5,000 cubic feet in its entirety, contains the history of Stevens’ long senatorial career, and chronicles Alaska’s transition from a newly-minted state to a significant player in U.S. history. Documents within the collection relate to the administrative, legislative and political functions of Stevens’ office.
