Vera Alexander to speak at UAF Legacy Lecture

University of Alaska Fairbanks alumna Vera Alexander will share her life experiences during the 2013 UAF Legacy Lecture June 3 at 7 p.m. in the Murie Building auditorium on the UAF West Ridge. An ice cream social will follow.
Alexander is the first woman to receive a doctorate at the University of Alaska and is an expert in the field of biological oceanography. She is nationally and internationally recognized for her service in the field of marine science. She was the first dean of UAF’s School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, serving for more than two decades until her retirement in 2004, when she was granted status as dean and professor emerita.
Alexander served as the president of the board of directors for the Arctic Research Consortium of the U.S., was a member of the International Scientific Advisory Committee for the Census of Marine Life for 12 years and a delegate to the North Pacific Research Organization for 15 years. She also served on the Marine Mammal Commission for 16 years, four of those years as chair. She presently serves on the science panel for the North Pacific Research Board.
