UAF student club hosts panel on aging university power plant
April 3, 2011
The UAF Beyond Coal student coalition is pressing for more campus sustainability initiatives and use
of renewable alternatives to coal. A panel discussion on addressing the needs of
the university's aging power plant will take place Friday, April 8, from 3:30 p.m.
– 5:30 p.m. in the Wood Center multilevel lounge. The discussion will provide a forum
to hear updates from local experts.
Panelist include Michele Hebert, director of the Office of Sustainability; Charles Ward, UAF Utilities; Mike Ruckhaus, Design and Construction; and Lissa Hughes, conservation solutions coordinator for the Northern Alaska Environmental
Center.
UAF currently operates a combined heat and power plant with a peak load of 9 megawatts
and a power generating capacity of 23 megawatts using two coal-fired and two oil-fired
boilers and a 9.6 megawatt backup diesel generator.
