UAF to host forums for athletic director finalists

Three finalists for the position of intercollegiate athletics director at the University of Alaska Fairbanks will visit campus July 13-20.

The three candidates, Derrick Johnson, Milton Richards and Sterling Seward, will spend a day on campus meeting with members of the search committee, university administration, and Alaska Nanooks staff members and coaches.

Each finalist will hold a public forum on the Fairbanks campus. The candidates will give 20-minute presentations on their visions for the Alaska Nanooks Department of Athletics. UAF encourages members of the community, the media, boosters, fans, faculty and staff to attend the forums and ask questions.

Derrick Johnson
Johnson most recently served as the director of athletics at Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, a position he has held since 2015. His career in athletics has spanned more than two decades and includes positions in coaching, administration and public relations. Johnson has a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina at Aiken and a master’s degree from the United States Sports Academy.

Milton Richards
Richards most recently served as the senior director of athletics and recreation at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, a position he held from November 2011 through June 2015. He has collegiate athletic experience that spans more than 35 years in higher education, serving as an instructor, a consultant, a chief financial officer and a director of athletics at multiple universities in various NCAA divisions. Richards has a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and doctorate degree from West Virginia University.

Sterling Steward
Steward currently serves as the director of athletics at Savannah State University in Savannah, Georgia, a position he has held since 2011. He has collegiate athletic experience that spans two decades and has served in various positions including administration, compliance and consulting. Steward has a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi.
