BestColleges.com has named UAF one of 50 U.S. colleges and universities that have distinguished themselves as the nation’s greenest schools. According to BestColleges.com, these schools have launched the most effective initiatives to reduce their carbon footprints.

"The UAF Office of Sustainability recently erected the 'sustainability village,' a residence compound that uses renewable energy, wastewater management and permaculture, and serves as an environmental education center for other students and faculty members," BestColleges.com noted.

BestColleges also cited the bike exchange and maintenance program, which encourages alternative transportation among students and faculty members.

UAF has a gold rating from the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System™,  or STARS program, a transparent, self-reporting framework for colleges and universities to measure their sustainability performance.
