UAF's Chukchi campus to host science conference

The Chukchi campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks will play host to the 7th Western Alaska Interdisciplinary Science Conference and Forum on April 24-25 in Kotzebue.

The conference will bring together scientists, educators, community leaders and community members from across the state to discuss scientific issues relevant to western Alaska.

The conference will focus on the impact of global warming on the lives of the residents of arctic Alaska. Local and traditional knowledge will be an important component. The two-day event will highlight scientific studies in the Northwest Arctic Borough region.

The organizers are accepting submissions from all individuals and organizations working on science projects and data collection in the
borough, as well as other regions of Alaska.

The conference will have sessions on local and subsistence science; environment, energy and climate change; biomedical and
health science; and animal, fishery and marine science.

Approximately 20 scientists will share their works and findings through talks at the conference.

Registration for WAISC 2014 can be done at http://seagrant.uaf.edu/conferences/waisc/. The registration fee is $60.

The deadline for submitting an abstract for presentations at the conference is March 31.
