Three UAF graduate students attended the UArctic International Arctic School in Harbin, China, from Jan. 4-12. The program hosted 100 international students from 25 countries, including UAF's Liz Bowman (IARC Center for Arctic Policy Studies), Nick Hasson (Geophysical Institute Permafrost Lab) and Sojung Ha (Center for Cross-Cultural Studies). The topic of the program was “To understand: Arctic environment and ecosystem.”

The classroom component included a series of lectures on the Arctic environment from regional experts. As a complement to the discussions, several speakers from the Harbin Institute of Technology highlighted their scientific work in the Arctic. Many of  the winter school speakers shared an expertise on persistent organic pollutants and have contributed research to the Arctic Council’s Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program working group.

The Harbin Institute of Technology plans to host the international school twice a year in the future. They will host the course once during the summer for undergraduate students and once in the winter for graduate students. More information on the program can be found through UArctic news updates and on the HIT webpage.
