Chancellor urges support for United Way

October 21, 2011

Over the years, UAF employees and students have generously contributed time, talents and dollars to the United Way of the Tanana Valley to support organizations that provide important human services in the Fairbanks area. One third of Fairbanks community residents will need help from a United Way member agency in their lifetime. By supporting the United Way Community Care Fund, we can make sure help will be there when it’s needed.

The Community Care Fund is distributed among all 23 United Way agencies. These organizations share ideas and resources to make the community better. UAF needs the community's support for us to succeed, and the community needs our support for it to succeed.

Sherry and I strongly support the United Way, and we have made our annual contribution. As part of UAF's community engagement outreach efforts, I encourage every employee to follow our lead. You may give to any 501(c)(3) organization of your choice, which includes the UAF/University of Alaska Foundation. You decide where your contribution should go, and you have the option of using a payroll deduction. (This year UAF Human Resources will distribute the contribution forms.)

The United Way of the Tanana Valley has set its goal this year to increase the number of contributors from 2,600 to 3,200. UAF employees can help meet this goal!

Lael and Mark Oldmixon are co-chairs of UAF’s United Way fundraising efforts this year. Your department will be contacted to set up an agency presentation for your unit, or you can arrange for a brief presentation with Lael or Mark Oldmixon during Oct. 10 – 21. Lael can be reached at 474-6679 or lmoldmixon@alaska.edu, Mark at 474-6027 or mtoldmixon@alaska.edu.

Thank you for all you do for UAF and for the Fairbanks community. Together we can make a difference.

P.S. Fill out a United Way form, return it to UAF HR, and you could win a great prize, including family season passes to Nanook hockey, basketball and volleyball games, or a UAF parking pass for one year! The drawing will be at noon Tuesday, Nov. 15, in the Wood Center multilevel lounge during our final fundraising event, the annual Chili Cook Off. Submit your form today!
