The University of Alaska Press title "Gaining Daylight: Life on Two Islands," by Sara Loewen, was selected as the winner of the 2014 WILLA Literary Award in creative nonfiction. Also from the press, "Upriver: Poems," by Carolyn Kremers, was selected as a finalist for poetry.

Winners and finalists represent the best published literature for women’s or girls’ stories set in the North American West. Women Writing the West, a Colorado-based association of writers and other professionals, will present the awards in October. They are named for Willa Cather (1873-1947), author of "My Antonia" and "O Pioneers!"
