University to dedicate Margaret Murie Building

The University of Alaska Fairbanks will dedicate its newest teaching and research facility during a ceremony Thursday, Aug. 22, at 2 p.m. in the courtyard outside the Murie Building on UAF's West Ridge. A reception and self-guided tours of the building will follow.
The new Murie Building, named for alumna and conservationist Margaret “Mardy” Murie, opened this summer. It contains 100,000 square feet of classrooms and laboratories designed for research and teaching life sciences. Its integrated design will allow tomorrow’s scientists to train in modern facilities and work alongside faculty members doing cutting-edge research.
In 1924, Murie was the first woman graduate of the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines, which eventually became the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Her career as a naturalist and author spanned decades and earned her numerous awards and recognition as one of the founders of the conservation movement in the United States. Margaret Murie passed away in 2003 at the age of 101.
