Walsh Hall open house Nov. 10
November 7, 2017
Members of the UAF and local community are invited to an open house to see the newly
repaired and renovated Walsh Hall Friday, Nov. 10, from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Walsh Hall is located at 1797 Chatanika Drive, next to the University Fire Station.
Walsh Hall was first opened in 1959 and offered 12 one-bedroom units to married students.
After a major steam pipe burst in January 2015, the Department of Residence Life,
in collaboration with Design and Construction, Facility Services and UA Risk Services
created an extensive plan to address mechanical issues, improve the resident spaces
and upgrade the facilities. Each unit has been equipped with new appliances, furniture
and vinyl floor planking, and energy-efficient windows and exterior security entrances.
Other upgrades include replacing electrical systems, plumbing, security systems and
fire safety systems.
The building is named for Michael Walsh of Nome, a member of the UA Board of Regents
from 1943 to 1959. In 1955, Walsh was one of 55 delegates who wrote the draft of Alaska's
Constitution.
