Wearable maps and satellite images dress up GeoData Center

Mary Matthews sees a woman’s gown in unusual materials. Her latest creations use maps and satellite images molded into feminine, graceful lines.
View Matthew’s work at the GeoData Center and Map Sales’ First Friday event, “Remaking Maps: Creating Legends,” on April 4, 5-7 p.m. at 204 Akasofu Building.
Matthews is known for art that uses, among other things, wasp nests and leaves. Her new pieces in this show include two evening gowns made of satellite photo maps and a large map tree with a tree house being climbed by sassy female explorers. In addition, there will be a series of watercolor images of women in the wilderness in fashionable attire painted on topographical maps.
The GeoData Center and Map Sales is part of the Alaska Satellite Facility within the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The GI and the International Arctic Research Center are sponsoring this event.
