Week’s events: Math faculty, opioid lecture, changing Arctic, bluegrass tunes

University of Alaska Fairbanks Summer Sessions and Lifelong Learning is hosting more
than 40 free lectures, concerts and other events this summer. Here is what’s happening
during the week ahead:
• On Monday, July 9, the Down Memory Lane interview series will include a discussion
with Barbara Lando, UAF professor of mathematics and computer science, 1969-1990,
and Clif Lando, associate professor of mathematics, 1969-1999. Veteran journalist
Robert Hannon will conduct the interview, which will be at 7 p.m. at the Elvey Building
auditorium.
• On Tuesday, July 10, the Healthy Living lecture series will feature Dr. Jay Butler,
chief medical officer for the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services, speaking
about “Addressing Opioids and Methamphetamines in 2018 — Alaska Communities Respond.”
The lecture will be at 7 p.m. at the Murie Building auditorium.
• On Wednesday, July 11, the Discover Alaska lecture series will present Hajo Eiken,
director of the International Arctic Research Center, discussing “Responding to Rapid
Environmental Change in Alaska’s Arctic.” The lecture will be at 7 p.m. at the Murie
Building auditorium.
• On Thursday, July 12, the Music in the Garden concert series will host the Dry Cabin
String Band. Music begins at 7 p.m. at the Georgeson Botanical Garden.
