Week's events: UAF leaders, plant-based eating, black history, big band tunes

University of Alaska Fairbanks Summer Sessions and Lifelong Learning is hosting nearly
50 free lectures, concerts and other events this summer. Here is what’s happening
during the week ahead:
- On Sunday, July 30, the Centennial Celebration Speakers Series will feature former University of Alaska Fairbanks Chancellor Marshall Lind. The series includes conversations with notable figures who helped shape UAF’s history. The event will be at 4 p.m. at the Elvey Building auditorium.
- On Monday, July 31, the Down Memory Lane interview series will feature a discussion with Paul Reichardt, professor emeritus of chemistry, 1972-2007, and Terry Chapin, distinguished professor emeritus of biology, 1973-2011. Veteran journalist Robert Hannon will conduct the interviews, which will be at 7 p.m. at the Elvey Building auditorium.
- On Tuesday, Aug. 1, the Healthy Living lecture series will feature registered and licensed dietitian Katie Garrity on “Moving toward a plant-based diet.” The lecture will be at 7 p.m. at the Murie Building auditorium.
- On Wednesday, Aug. 2, the Discover Alaska lecture series will present Dorothy Jones, UAF associate professor emeritus, on “The history of the African-American community in Fairbanks.” The lecture will be at 7 p.m. at the Murie Building auditorium.
- On Thursday, Aug. 3, the Music in the Garden concert series will host the Fairbanks Community Band. The traditional big band mixes swing-era dance tunes with Latin, bop and modern influences. Music begins at 7 p.m. at the Georgeson Botanical Garden.
