Welcome home, Nanooks
September 4, 2019
It’s about that time — time to kick off another year here at UAF. My name is Bernard Aoto, and I am
currently the student body president of the Associated Students of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, or ASUAF.
It is an exciting time at UAF. Student activities and organizations are lively, while the classroom experience and research being done here are changing the world. For most of you, walking across the stage at graduation may seem like forever away but it will be here before you know it — and for those who are set to graduate this year, you’re almost there, so keep up the great work!
During your time here this year, I hope you realize that ASUAF is a resource for you. It is our duty to advocate for and empower students to make UAF a better place for all. Student involvement and engagement in the process is essential to ensuring that our voices are heard. It is our responsibility to play an active role in bettering the community
around us, and it is a privilege that I hope you take advantage of throughout your time here.
I challenge you to do several things during this next year: One, get to know your student representatives and communicate with them regularly. Two, become a part of campuswide conversations, ask questions, encourage answers. Three, make the UAF community something that you are both satisfied with and proud of. Four, check out the ASUAF website to stay-up-to date on what we are doing, or swing by our offices in the Wood Center when you can.
For those who are joining us for the first time, if I can give you any advice it would be to put yourself out there. Pour your heart and soul into your time at UAF and I promise you will not be disappointed. Try it all, at least once. Whether that be experiencing an athletics game, joining a club, listening to a world-renowned lecturer, or exploring the great Alaska outdoors, don’t walk away from this place knowing you missed an opportunity.
Lastly, make your education meaningful and catered to you! Take electives outside your major, try something new, but most importantly find yourself and become comfortable with who you truly are. Surround yourself with those who support and encourage you, and make memories that will last far beyond your time here. For all the late nights, midterm/final cramming sessions, and stressful group projects that you will inevitably experience, I can assure you that it will be worth it when you walk across that stage.
You have made an excellent decision in choosing UAF. You belong here and we are happy to have you! Welcome home, Nanooks!
