A team from the University of Alaska Fairbanks earned ninth place among a national field of universities in the Collegiate Wind Competition in May.

The U.S. Department of Energy-sponsored competition was part of the American Wind Energy Association's Windpower conference on May 22-25 in New Orleans. Undergraduate students were challenged to develop wind energy solutions as a team. To participate, students developed a business plan, established a deployment strategy, and built and tested a wind turbine.

UAF’s Arctic Winds team focused its efforts on developing a small, reliable system for emergency or backup power situations. UAF was also one of three teams featured in a Department of Energy promotional video about the competition.

Team members, all mechanical engineering majors, included Clay Allen, Elisha Dalbec, Jessica Garvin, Matthew Pacheco,  Adam Becia, Daniel Poesy, Taylor Roth, Alex Mitchell, Isaac Lammers and Dalton Newbrough.
