Women's Basketball falls 86-58 at rival UAA

Anchorage, Alaska - UAA used a strong second half, outscoring Alaska 52-32 over the final 20 minutes to run away with an 86-58 Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball win on Saturday evening at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex in Anchorage.
Sasha King led four Seawolves (4-2, 1-0 GNAC) in double figures with a game-high 21 points to go with a game-high nine assists. Alysa Horn posted a double-double with 16 points and a game-best 14 rebounds while Mariesha Harris and Jordan Martin each tallied 13 points.
The Nanooks (0-7, 0-1 GNAC) were paced by junior guard April Fultz (Rialto, Calif./Political science), who was the sole Alaska player to record double figures with 18 points. Junior guard Destini Lewis (Beaumont, Texas/Psychology) chipped in nine points and a team-high seven boards while senior guard Taylor Altenburg (Elko, Nev./Criminal justice) had a career-high four blocks.
UAA shot 46-percent for the game while Alaska shot 40-percent for the first time this season. Anchorage held a 42-35 advantage on the boards, including a 16-13 lead on the offensive glass. The Seawolves led 19-12 in assists and forced Alaska into 24 turnovers, resulting in 23 points.
The Nanooks surged out to an early 11-4 with 13:27 to go in the first half but the Seawolves responded with an 11-0 run to grab a 15-11 advantage with 8:31 to go. Leading 24-23 late in the frame, UAA ended the first with a 10-3 run over the final 2:19 to take a 34-26 lead into the break.
The 'Wolves tallied 10 of the first 15 points of the second half to hold a 44-31 advantage, the largest lead of the game, with 14:46 remaining. Alaska trimmed the deficit to six at 44-38 with 13:37 left but over the next eight minutes, UAA shifted into high gear, outscoring the 'Nooks 24-5 to maintain a comfortable 68-43 lead. Anchorage led by as many as 30 late en route to the conference-opening victory.
Alaska returns to action Dec. 17 and 18 at home against Dallas Christian College. Both games are set for a 5:15 p.m. tipoff and will precede men's basketball's games against Multnomah.
