Head coach Scott Jerome announced the Alaska women's skiing program has signed Amelia Anderson (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Nichole Bathe (Madison, Wisc.) to National Letters of Intent and each will enroll in the fall with four years of athletic eligibility.
Anderson, a 2012 graduate of the Winter Sports School in Park City, Utah, in 2012, has been a member of the Wasatch Nordic Ski Academy since 2011. The co-captain placed seventh at the J1 United States Nationals this year in the 10-kilometer skate while also taking 12th at Junior Nationals in the skate sprint. Anderson previously spent 2009-11 as a skier for the Salt Lake Nordic Ski Team where she was the 2010 Most Valuable Skier.
She was also a three-year letter winner in cross country running from 2009-11 at Skyline High School in Utah, and also plans to run for the Nanooks in the fall. Anderson will pursue a degree in mechanical engineering upon enrolling next semester.
“Mia raced well at Junior Nationals here in Fairbanks,” Jerome said. “Her strong work ethic and high level of fitness will be strong assets as she enters our program. Mia was also a top cross country runner in her home state of Utah. She loves running which will also bolster our cross country team as she plans to be a dual-sport athlete. We are very pleased that Mia will be joining our teams this fall.”
Bathe, a 2013 graduate of Verona Area High School in Wisconsin, was a four-time United States Ski Team All-American from 2010-13. She was also four times named a Junior National All-American, a two-year J1 travel squad member in 2012 and 2013 over in Europe and this year, she placed third during the SuperTour sprints. The Wisconsin state champion, she was the Midwest points leader from 2010-12.
A dual-sport athlete, Bathe was also a four-year distance runner for Verona's track and field program. Bathe intends to major in elementary education next semester.
We are very excited that Nichole has chosen to attend Alaska and ski for the Nanooks,” Jerome said. “She is a tough Midwesterner who is not afraid of cold weather. She raced well at Junior Nationals here in Fairbanks two months ago taking bronze in the classic event on a very tough course at Birch Hill. She is a fierce competitor. I could see it in her eyes in that 10-kilometer event at Birch. She is just plain tough. That is the type of attitude we want on our Nanooks squad. Nichole has also raced in Europe in both 2012 and 2013 with the US J1 team. That international racing experience can be very valuable for NCAA skiing.”
Anderson and Bathe become Jerome's first two signees during the spring period for the women's skiing program.
