A free workshop on butchering and handling chickens safely will be offered at 7 p.m. Sept. 5 at the Fairbanks Regional Public Health Center.

Fairbanks poultry expert Steve Davila will talk about the butchering, and public health nurse Dennette Marks will discuss safe handling through the butchering process. She will cover handling birds, eggs, equipment and chicken manure. She'll also discuss preventing common infections like salmonella and campylobacter, which are associated with chickens.

Mara Bacsujlaky will moderate the 90-minute session, which is hosted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service. The health center is located at 1025 Barnette St. For more information, contact Bacsujlaky at 907-474-5741.
