June 22, 2018

Participants in a free how-to workshop will help build a thermal mass heater for a greenhouse June 29 in Ester.

The biomass heating workshop will take place between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Energy specialist Art Nash, with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, will coordinate construction of a wood-fired heater from fire brick and cinder blocks. The heater warms the soil to aid the growth of seedlings a month or two earlier in the spring and also will heat the greenhouse for a later harvest.

Nash will provide information about combustion, thermal storage, wood gasification, heat distribution and techniques to extend the growing season.

Anyone who wishes to participate is asked to contact Nash at 907-474-6366 or alnashjr@alaska.edu. The workshop is sponsored by the UAF Cooperative Extension Service.
