Yukon Drive summer upgrades, road closure
February 9, 2018
Yukon Drive is scheduled for resurfacing and sidewalk upgrades by the Alaska Department
of Transportation and Public Facilities between mid-May and the end of July; exact
dates will be determined in the spring. The Yukon Drive resurfacing project will run
from the intersection of Tanana Loop near the Butrovich Building through campus to
the bus pull-out at Wood Center. In addition to upgrading the roadbed, the project
will improve the bus stops at the MBS complex and build sidewalks along the full length
of the north and south sides of the road, creating a safer pedestrian corridor for
the community.
In order to significantly shorten the project duration and reduce the overall project
cost, the UAF chancellor and the university president will allow closure of Yukon
Drive to vehicular traffic during construction. We understand that this road closure
will have significant, though short term, effects on the operations of several buildings
and delivery routes.
No vehicular traffic other than emergency vehicles will be allowed on Yukon Drive
for the duration of the project. Pedestrian traffic will be accommodated along Yukon
Drive to access all parts of campus, and accommodations for those needing it will
be supplemented by the shuttle system. Traffic control signage will be in place to
route traffic around the project and maintain access to all campus buildings. Access
will primarily be from the north side of campus from Farmers Loop, North Tanana Drive,
Kuskokwim Way, North Tanana Loop (i.e., the dirt road) and through Koyukuk Drive on
West Ridge to join back with Tanana Loop near Butrovich. Details of the traffic plan
will be published before the project begins in May.
Project construction will be managed by DOT&PF working closely with UAF Facilities
Services Division of Design and Construction. DDC will be making initial contact with
building coordinators along Yukon Drive over the next couple of weeks.
