The annual Arctic Innovation Competition is accepting entries for the chance to win cash prizes of up to $15,000.
The University of Alaska Fairbanks College of Business and Security Management sponsors the competition, which presents cash awards for the best inventions and business ideas. Usibelli Coal Mine is the presenting sponsor. The submission deadline is 11:59 p.m. on Friday, March 3.
The competition is open to all ages. Ideas don’t have to be centered on the Arctic. Submissions will be judged in the following divisions:
- Main division – ages 18 and older
- Junior division – ages 13-17
- Cub division – ages 12 and under
Participants compete for a total of more than $45,000 in awards and scholarships, including a $15,000 first-place prize in the main division. Additional awards include four $2,000 prizes awarded to main division finalists for the best idea in the following categories:
- Arctic
- Submitted by an Alaska college student
- Sustainability
- Climate adaptation
Junior and cub divisions, sponsored by Kinross Fort Knox, will share almost $4,000 in cash prizes. They'll also share $14,000 in awards from Alaska 529 education savings plan.
Finalist presentations and an award ceremony will take place in person in Fairbanks on Saturday, April 22.
