Nitrate isotopes and microbe-metabolite interactions in the California Current Ecosystem

The California Current Ecosystem is profoundly impacted by El NiƱo-Southern Oscillation events, marine heatwaves, and decadal climate variability. Lihini Aluwihare, professor of marine geochemistry at Scripps Institute of Oceanography, will discuss the processes that control the nitrate inventory in the CCE and efforts to illuminate a new scale of ecosystem interaction by identifying dissolved organic compounds that structure microbe-microbe interactions.
