Learn to grow grain, such as this sample of feed barley grown in Palmer in 2023, in your own garden in a free webinar.
You don't have to be a large-scale grain farmer to grow tasty, nutritious crops for you and your family. In a free webinar hosted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, learn how to grow hulled barley, wheat, rye, buckwheat, quinoa, dry peas, sunflowers and more in your backyard garden.
Bob Van Veldhuizen will discuss each crop and the necessary growing conditions, including their suitability for successful production in Alaska. Learn about important production methods such as soil preparation, fertilization (both synthetic and organic), harvesting and processing using typical garden tools and kitchen gadgets.
Van Veldhuizen is a recently retired agronomist from the University of Alaska Fairbanks Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station. He has 50-plus years of agricultural research experience across Alaska.
The webinar will be Wednesday, March 26, from noon to 1 p.m. Registration is required via the online form or by visiting https://bit.ly/GrowingGrains.
