Nanook Navigator and Student Success Spotlight: Latrice Bowman
The Nanook Navigator and Student Success spotlight for May is Latrice Bowman. Latrice is an assistant professor and math services coordinator at the College of Natural Science and Mathematics.
Why are you passionate about UAF students and their success?
To me UAF is home; the students here are unique. I like the diversity and commonality that UAF brings and I like seeing our students go on to do bigger and better things.
Favorite part about being Instructor and Math Services Coordinator?
I love teaching mathematics and helping students overcome some of their mathematical fears/troubles. As the coordinator, I like seeing students who are good in math sharing their knowledge and experience to help others.
What is your favorite feature in Nanook Navigator?
Being able to text students. Sometimes I just need to touch base with them quickly and it is not always clear when they check email. I have found that texts usually get responded to within about 10 minutes.
How long have you been utilizing Nanook Navigator?
Since 2018 as a faculty member, since 2020 for tutoring/grading support.
Tips, advice, or ideas to support other Nanook Navigator users or student success practices?
Nanook Navigator can be used to set up 15 min introduction meetings with students at the beginning of the semester. It is a quick way to touch base and make sure they are on the right track or have any initial questions answered. It can also be used for notifications about low grades as a way to connect students to tutoring or to appointments with their instructor. I have found that my tutors can use Nanook Navigator to message each other when they need to switch shifts.
