UAF campus re-key project underway

Several years of planning have culminated in a new keying system for most buildings on the Troth Yeddha’ Campus in Fairbanks. The project will increase building security and occupant safety.

After many COVID-19-related delays, the locks and key hardware for the first phase of the campus rekey project have arrived. This work will continue through 2022 and 2023. The Duckering Building and Engineering Learning and Innovation Facility were completed during the latter part of 2021. The installation crew is now moving to the Energy Technology Test Modules, then to the West Ridge Research Building, and will continue through the rest of phase I.

As each building’s phase approaches, Facilities Services will reach out to access approvers and building occupants to go through the steps necessary to receive their new keys ahead of installation. Other buildings in phase I include: GI storage, Elvey, physical plant, Harper, Brooks, Chapman and Murie.

Phase II will roll out upon completion of Phase I, which is expected in May 2022. Buildings in Phase II include: Gruening, Rasmuson Library, Fine Arts Complex, University Park, Health, Safety and Security, Constitution Hall, Wood Center, Signers Hall, Irving I, O’Neill, Irving II, Whitaker, and the IAB greenhouse.

Timing on Phase III is dependent on earlier phases, but planned for November 2022 through June 2023. Phase III buildings include: Bunnell, Eielson, Forestry, Fine Arts/Theater, Patty Center, Lola Tilly, Patty Ice, Student Rec Center, Modulars 1, 11 and 12, Honors House, Coal Lab, Reichardt, Arctic Health Research Building, UA Museum of the North, Ski Hut, BiRD, and Akasofu.

An exciting component of the re-key project is the movement to an online key request system. The system will allow for easier requests and tracking of access, and will offer departmental reporting functions regarding key assignments. A training session is under development to help officials with access authorization to learn and use the new system.
