LGBTQ+ at UAF
Inclusivity at UAF
UAF is a university where EVERYONE is welcome and EVERYONE belongs. UAF prohibits gender-based harassment and violence targeting transgender individuals and/or individuals not conforming to gender norms. All members of the UAF community are entitled to learn, live and work in an environment free from sex and gender-based discrimination.
Simply put, being a welcoming and supportive community is just who we are as #NanookNation.
To assist you in ensuring that UAF is gender inclusive, please start with this brochure, read through the resources and information on this web page, and watch the Gender Inclusion 101 training.
How UAF is promoting inclusivity of the LGBTQIA+ community
LGBTQIA+ is an umbrella term that is often used to refer to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual as well as myriad other communities, as a whole. UAF is promoting diversity and inclusion of this community through inclusion initiatives across campus in the following ways:
- Department of Equity and Compliance - Title IX
The Department of Equity and Compliance ensures equity and compliance with civil rights laws and the UA Board of Regents Policy and Regulations on nondiscrimination. Report sex and gender-based discrimination here. - Gender inclusive restrooms and housing
UAF provides options that allow transgender students use the restrooms, locker rooms, and housing consistent with their gender identity; so trans students can participate fully in all the educational programs and activities UAF has to offer. - Gender inclusion training
Training is provided to educate students and employees at UAF on ways to foster diversity and inclusion in the education and work environments. To request training, please visit our training page and complete the request form. - Gender Inclusive Work Group
This group reviews and addresses inclusion and safety related issues in athletic programs, facilities, health care and counseling, ensures systems allow for inclusion such as preferred names, travel, training and education as well as policy updates. - Gender and Sexuality Alliance
GSA is a student group that works to promote diversity, inclusivity, and equal opportunities for everyone on the UAF campus. GSA meetings are safe spaces where they gather to plan events, play games, have discussions, and meet new people. Absolutely everyone is welcome! - Generation Action
This student organization works on reproductive justice and LGBTQ+ issues. Email genactionuaf@gmail.com. - Green Dot program
The UAF Green Dot strategy is a violence prevention program based on empowering bystanders. When people attend our bystander training, they learn to recognize potentially harmful situations and how to safely intervene. A green dot is the single choice to use your words or actions to prevent someone from being harmed. - Human Resources Office
The Human Resources Office oversees fair and equitable recruitment, professional development and retention of employees at UAF. - Nanook Diversity and Action Center (NDAC)
NDAC is a student-focused center that provides programs that promote and foster a community of inclusion, social justice, and cultural pluralism that honor and support diverse and intersectional identities and promote a campus free of violence, harassment, and abuse through the use of Green Dot and other prevention strategies. - Safe Zone Project
You may have seen a sticker or sign that indicate that a person is a "Safe Zone" or has been "Safe Zone Trained." These signs mean a person is open to talking about and being supportive of LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer/Questioning +) individuals and identities. - Safe Zone training
Safe Zone training provided by Nanook Diversity and Action Center isn’t meant to change a particular space, but to provide the knowledge and skills to individuals invested in creating safe and affirming environments wherever they go. - Student Health and Counseling Center
The Student Health and Counseling Center provides medical and counseling services to eligible UAF students, including hormone therapy. - Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program
Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies offers an interdisciplinary minor focusing on women, girls, and historical and contemporary experiences related to femaleness. In addition, the minor focuses on multiple issues related to gender, such as masculinities, femininities and sexualities.

UA policy and regulation
Board of Regents' Nondiscrimination Policy states:
"discrimination against any individual because of race, religion, color, national origin, citizenship, age, sex, physical or mental disability, status as a protected veteran, marital status, changes in marital status, pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions, parenthood, sexual orientation, gender identity, political affiliation or belief, genetic information, or other legally protected status is prohibited."
Although only gender identity is specified in the nondiscrimination statement, both gender expression and gender identity are covered under the protected class of sex.
UAF takes the protection of minors very seriously. UAF's Protection of Minors policy follows the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District Administrative Regulation 130 regarding confidentiality. Personnel should not disclose a student's transgender status to others, including parents, and/or other personnel unless there is a specific "need to know." Protection of Minors information can be located at Environmental Health, Safety & Risk Management.
