BIO

Andrew Miles is a research assistant professor at ACEP. His work is focused on the application and incorporation of energy systems into microgrids. Furthermore, he works on bringing advanced power system protection and data analytics to Alaska as a whole to improve the resiliency of communities large and small. His research areas include power system protection and transients, data analytics, and estimation theory.

Miles received his B.S. and M.S degrees from the University of Idaho in Electrical Engineering and a certificate in power system protection and relaying. Following graduation, he worked in industry at Black & Veatch as an electrical engineer for protection and controls. After working in industry, he returned to the University of Idaho for a Ph.D. in electrical engineering. Through his Ph.D. program, his dissertation focused on state estimation and robust-regression applications to improve the resilience and cyber security of power systems. He also worked on a variety of applied research projects such as developing a peer-to-peer transactive energy market web application for a local utility. During his education, he also held recurring internship experiences at Alaska Electric Light & Power, and Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories.
