Richard Wies is a professor in the electrical computer engineering department at UAF. As an electric power systems expert, he leads research with ACEP on engineering challenges of renewable energy integration in remote islanded microgrids.

His current research includes development of 1) models to understand the impacts of inverter-dominated grids on stability, 2) control system strategies for grid-forming operation of stand-alone asynchronous renewable generation, 3) advanced distribution management system strategies for optimizing energy distribution and storage with high renewable energy penetration, and 4) energy distribution models to assess impacts of renewable energy on food, energy and water system infrastructure in remote Alaska communities.

Wies received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Wyoming and has been with UAF since 1999.
