Erlingur Gudleifsson, Iceland-based energy researcher with ACEP, gave a presentation at the Alaska Innovation Summit in Juneau last month.

Drawing on innovation and diffusion of innovation theories, Gudleifsson discussed how the energy utility in Iceland’s capital has led innovation in the geothermal sector in Iceland for nearly 100 years.

He highlighted the innovations, from the early stages of geothermal energy development to advancements in fiber-optic connections, carbon capture and sequestration, and freshwater shrimp farming.

The Innovation Summit is organized by the Juneau Economic Development Council and brings together entrepreneurs, business and industry experts, policymakers and researchers from Alaska and beyond.

While in Juneau, Gudleifsson also gave a presentation during a lunch and learn session by Rep. Zack Fields at the Alaska State Capitol. Following a brief talk by ACEP’s Gwen Holdmann, Gudleifsson shed light on how Iceland strategically partnered with the heavy industry sector to attract large-scale electricity consumers, ultimately leading to the construction of the country’s largest hydroelectric project in the highlands of eastern Iceland.
