Arctic Transformation: Understanding Arctic Research and the Vital Role of Science

Earlier this month UAF Interim Vice Chancellor for Research Larry Hinzman, Alaska Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration Director Cathy Cahill, and ACEP research faculty affiliate George Roe participated as speakers at the Arctic Transformation: Understanding Arctic Research and the Vital Role of Science seminar held at the headquarters of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC.  The meeting was convened as a follow-up to the GLACIER dialogue in Anchorage and President Obama's visit to multiple sites in Alaska.  Its objective was to examine the United States’ science and research activities in the Arctic, as well as identify knowledge and capability gaps and raise awareness of the importance of the Arctic and the responsibilities of the United States as an Arctic nation during the U.S. Chairmanship of the Arctic Council.

Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Angus King (I-ME) provided opening remarks for the event.  Dr. John Holdren, Assistant to the President for Science and Technology, Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy Chairman, and Chairman of the Arctic Executive Steering Committee gave the keynote address reviewing highlights of the president's visit with its associated context and related initiatives.

Copies of the various presentations and video recordings of the speakers are available for viewing and download at http://csis.org/event/arctic-transformation-understanding-arctic-research-and-vital-role-science.
