Microgrid Competition Winner Works with PSI Lab

Dan Sambor, a graduate student in the Atmosphere & Energy Program in the Civil and Environmental Engineering department at Stanford University, is visiting ACEP this month. He has travelled up the Alcan Highway and driven nearly all state highways, including the Dalton, over the past couple of weeks. He will now visit with ACEP researchers and local renewable energy stakeholders for the rest of the month.

Dan is one of the co-founders of DONuT Energy, a start-up company that was selected by a panel of energy experts from around the state to receive one of the Technology Seed Awards in last year’s round of the Microgrid Technology Competition.

Dan, in conjunction with co-founders Brock Taute and Miles Evans, is working on load estimator models to improve the accuracy of microgrid design for Alaskan villages for which load data is not available. DONuT has also partnered with HOMER Energy to build an API that will call HOMER’s optimization engine using these load estimator models, with the end goal of streamlining microgrid design for remote areas of Alaska and other parts of the world.
