ACEP Research Engineer to Deploy Storm Surge Sensors in Western Alaska

ACEP Research Engineer Nick Konefal will be traveling to Northwest Alaska this week deploying storm surge sensors in three coastal communities.

As part of the Rapid Deployment Inundation Platforms project (RDIP), Konefal will deploy platforms and sensors in the coastal communties of Kivalina, Shaktoolik, and Shishmaref.

While in each community, previously deployed tripods will be reconstructed near the water line that will house water level sensors. The sensors will be activated to collect data during storm surge events. Once a storm event has passed, data can be downloaded, sent for analysis, and sensors reset for the next storm event.

A local representative in each community will conduct the data retrieval process allowing for efficient access to remote data. Storm surge data will help researchers understand the changing coastal Alaska environment and how to prepare for future events.

The RDIP project funded by the Alaska Ocean Observing System. For more project information contact Nick Konefal at nkonefal@alaska.edu.
