Canadian Report Details the True Cost of Diesel Power Generation in Remote Communities

A new report released by Gwich’in Council International provides transparent analysis of the full costs of generating electricity in remote, northern communities.

 The Diverging from Diesel report uses utility cost data from nine fossil fuel reliant communities in Northern Canada, and includes the costs associated with greenhouse gas emissions, and the external social impacts of being reliant on diesel fuel.

 Canada has 175 remote communities that distribute their electricity through islanded microgrids. 

 The report was released during the Arctic Energy Summit in Helsinki, Finland last week.
