Rapidly Deployed Inundation Platform Deployment (RDIP)

Research Engineer Nick Konefal traveled to Kivalina, Shaktoolik and Shishmaref in Northwest Alaska over the last two weeks to deploy water level sensors as part of the RDIP project. While in each village, Konefal worked with the local environmental coordinators to build and install pre-made tripods on the coast in areas that experience strong seasonal storms. The water level sensors, which are housed inside the tripods will collect storm surge and coastal inundation data throughout the fall storm season.

While the sensors are deployed and collecting data, the environmental coordinators will download and send data weekly to be analyzed. Storm data will be used by Alaska Ocean Observation System (AOOS) and the National Weather Service for storm model verification.
