New Classes combine CCHRC and GVEA Knowledge

The Cold Climate Housing Research Center and Golden Valley Electric Association will offer two classes for Fairbanks homeowners and contractors this fall.

Energy rater Emmett Leffel, of Alaska Thermal Imaging LLC, will teach the first class on Oct. 25. Leffel will cover how to prevent ice dams, frozen vents and other problems when building a residential roof. He'll also talk about how to remediate problems in existing homes and how to prevent their recurrence.

The second class will be taught by Paul Koop, of Bright Electric Services, on Nov. 1. Koop will cover how to make a backup plan for power outages, design electric circuitry for backup generators in new homes and properly retrofit existing homes to use generators. He'll also cover choosing, storing and safely operating portable electric generators.

Both classes will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at CCHRC's Research and Testing Facility at 955 Draanjik Drive. Admission is $10 per household for CCHRC members ($15 for nonmembers), and continuing education credits are available for contractors.
