Video Showcases Pioneer in Alaska Wind Energy
Kotzebue Electric Association was the first Alaska utility to integrate a community-scale wind farm into its diesel power microgrid.
A video filmed and edited by ACEP’s Amanda Byrd showcases the utility’s pioneering spirit and accomplishments.
The utility, located above the Arctic Circle, overcame challenges of permafrost, ice and temperature to integrate wind power to offset diesel.
KEA added to its initial wind farm to now generate a significant portion of its baseload needs through wind. A battery energy system was installed to increase the usable wind energy, and a heating system in the local hospital uses excess wind to heat its buildings.
