Boating Course Makes Field Deployment Safer

ACEP researcher Stephanie Jump recently returned from Port Aransas, Texas, where she completed a two-day boating safety course.

The course was a combination of classroom and hands-on training that included float plans, cold-water submersion, communications (VHF radios, satellite phones, maydays) on the first day of training. The second day of training was conducted on the water. Each student operated different boats and engines, and conducted safety drills involving retrieving a man overboard and docking a boat, to name a few.

The skills and information learned from this course can be invaluable to researchers who, like Jump, often spend weeks or months in the field deploying equipment and collecting data.
