CCHRC, GVEA and UAF CES Offer Two Home-owner Classes

UAF Cooperative Extension Service, Golden Valley Electric Association and the Cold Climate Housing Research Center are partnering to offer two homeowner classes this spring.

The first class, taught by forester Glen Holt, will give participants the best tips and tricks for gathering firewood. He'll explain when and how to harvest trees with low moisture content, offer tips to split and stack firewood so it dries as quickly as possible, describe how long to store it, and demonstrate which logs are best to select from the stack when burning.

The class, on Thursday, April 18, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., is $5 for CCHRC members and $10 for nonmembers. Then, in May, homeowners can sign up for a two-part woodshed workshop. The first class, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. May 10, will cover efficient wood stove operation and an overview of woodshed construction. Then on Saturday, May 11, groups of participants will construct one-cord wood sheds using the Fairbanks North Star Borough's step-by-step manual.

The cost of materials is included in the class, and participants can take home either a completed woodshed or a kit of materials to build one at home. Transport is the responsibility of the participant. The cost for this class is $125 for CCHRC members or $150 for nonmembers.
