New Publication Explores International Government Instruments Supporting Community Energy

Government policies and other instruments can pose both barriers and opportunities for community energy development around the world. A new research paper co-authored by ACEP’s Gwen Holdmann analyzes on the range of government tools available to facilitate energy transition and the implications of these instruments for community energy. 

The research identified four global categories of government tools designed to support community energy: payment-based, grid access, environmental protection, and community planning and capacity. It found that, in addition to the available government tools, Northern and Indigenous communities’ benefit from insight and experience of energy professionals, government officials and local energy champions. It also found that community engagement in local, on-the-ground energy initiatives is necessary for successful projects.
