Join Nome Joint Utilities in a Community Power Discussion on Micro-Reactors

Gwen Holdmann, ACEP’s lead researcher in nuclear energy, will be in Nome on Monday, Sept. 19, 2022, to share her insights on the current status of microreactor technologies and safety advancements in the U.S. nuclear energy industry. 

Nome Joint Utility System is continually assessing community power needs, both today and in the next 20 years. Other agencies have worked with the system to study/evaluate alternative power sources that might reduce reliance on high-cost diesel. Wind, solar, geothermal, natural gas and hydro have been evaluated.

Emerging technology in micronuclear reactors have been proposed as another alternative. What are micro reactors? Are they safe? What are the “upsides” and “downsides” associated with this technology?

The presentation will be at the UAF Northwest Campus’ Main Conference Room in the Nagozruk Building. If you are in Nome, please bring questions and concerns so there can be a robust discussion that incorporates numerous perspective and views.
