They gathered on the top floor of the new Engineering Learning and Innovation Facility to meet with student and faculty inventors and learn about innovative startups. Visitors learned about the OneTree project and UAF startup companies such as Be Cool Pharmaceutics, Barati Medical and Coupi. |

They also met student interns working at these companies through a program called Students2Startups. There were opportunities to solve real Alaska problems using on-site materials and prototypes, with prompts provided by the Alaska Community Challenge program. UAF Alumni Relations is working with Center ICE to plan another event in November 2019. Stay tuned for more information.

What's happening at UAF

Just plane awesome
Bering Air recently donated a Beechcraft King Air 200 business class twin turboprop aircraft to the UAF Community and Technical College. The King Air 200 will be used strictly for training CTC aviation maintenance students.
“This is exciting,” said Kevin Alexander, associate professor with the aviation maintenance program. “To have the direct industry support like this, to have an aircraft that modernizes our fleet, that makes us better equipped to train mechanics.” |
Since flying to Nome, this plane has completed thousands of medevac flights, charter flights and flights to Russia and has been in temperatures lower than 70 below. It comes to UAF with 22,840 total flight hours and more than 6 million miles flown.
“UAF was really excited about the possibility of getting it,” said Ben Koelsch, director of maintenance with Bering Air. “It just kind of felt like that was the right thing to do.”

WANTED: UAF alumni to choose award winners
We need your help! The UAF Alumni Association is looking for nominations for its two annual awards, the Distinguished Alumnus Award and the William R. Cashen Service Award. Honorees are selected by a committee of alumni and community members. Both awards will be presented at the Blue and Gold Celebration on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2020, at the Carlson Center.
The Distinguished Alumnus Award is the UAF Alumni Association's most prestigious award. It was first awarded in 1962 and continues to annually recognize living graduates of UAF. Alumni are selected for the award based on meritorious service on behalf of UAF, distinguished accomplishments in business and professional life, or distinguished human service in community affairs.
The William R. Cashen Service Award honors a person who has followed the example of its namesake. Cashen, class of '37, was an alumni director, professor and university marshal, as well as a public servant, historian, family man, proud alumnus and friend to many alumni. This award is designed to encourage such service and inspire all those associated with the University of Alaska Fairbanks. |
