Fall 2022 Accounting Recruitment Week

First, let’s clarify one thing: The traditional name has stuck, but “Accounting Recruitment Week” is really a lot more than just one week!  It is a collection of events held every year specifically for accounting students and alumni. Accounting firms from across Alaska come to campus for a Meet the Firms networking event to get to know you and share the opportunities they have available. You’ll be able to submit your applications to the attending firms, with the potential to interview with them during the scheduled interview week.

Prepare:

Research the recruiting accounting firms and the accounting profession in general

  • Consider scheduling an appointment with UAF Career Services to help prepare for Accounting Recruitment Week
  • Attend Meet the Firms on September 16th from 3:30pm - 5:30pm in the Wood Center Ballroom
  • Know what you want in a career
  • Know what you can offer potential employers
  • Research and understand what makes each firm unique so you can decide what type of firm you might want to work for, and what type of work you hope to do
  • Prepare a list of questions you can ask at the Meet & Greet

Apply: Update your resume, think of experiences you can tie into cover letters, and make sure you have at least three professional references ready if asked. Have these materials reviewed by more than one person. Consider scheduling an appointment with UAF Career Services office to review your resume and cover letter and conduct a mock interview.

Interview: If you are selected to interview, you will receive an email from Handshake to select your interview date and time. It is important that you look for this email and make your selections promptly! You’ll need to select your interview date and time before September 29th at 11:59pm AKT.

Follow up: Whether or not you get the job, send a thank you card or email to the firms. If you haven't heard back from a recruiter more than one week after your interview, send an email or call the firm.

After every Accounting Recruitment event, we ask recruiters, "What advice would you give applicants who plan to interview next year?" See what they had to say in past years:

  • "Come prepared to talk about your future. This includes knowing their graduation date and CPA eligibility plan. How they will get where they would like to be. How they will differentiate themselves" (BDO USA, LLP, 2021)
  • "Have a plan for the CPA exam!" (Altman, Rogers & Co., 2021)
  • "Follow up emails after an interview are something that should be done even if you're not interested in the firm you interviewed with. Maintaining eye contact is another thing I saw candidates struggling with." (The Brandon Skinner Group, P.C., 2021)
  • "You will benefit from resume help and interview practice." (RJG A Professional Corporation, CPAs 2018)
  • "Give the interview and the process 100% even if you are not sure where you want to end up. You never know who knows who or when you will see someone again. First impressions matter." (State of Alaska Division of Legislative Audit, 2018)
  • "Never be afraid to ask questions. Make sure your contact numbers and email addresses are current and up to date." (Wilson & Wilson CPAs, Inc. , 2018)
  • Friday, September 16, 1:00pm - 7:00pm: CBSM Accounting Day

    • 1:00pm-3:00pm: Professional Development Day
    • 3:30pm-5:30pm Meet the Firms
    • 6:00pm-7:00pm Student and Professional Dinner

**Between scheduled sessions, stay for games and door prizes

  • Sunday, September 25 @ 11:59 pm AKT: Candidate application deadline

  • Tuesday, September 27 @ 11:59 pm AKT: Deadline for firms to offer interviews to candidates

  • Thursday, September 29 @ 11:59 pm AKT: Deadline for candidates to select interview date/time

alliance cpa

Alliance CPAs LLC (Alliance) was created as a result of the merger of Kohler, Schmitt and Hutchison, PC and Cook & Haugeberg LLC in July of 2020.  Both predecessor firms have a long history of serving a variety of clients in Fairbanks, Alaska.  New professional staff members, and those performing student accounting internships, can expect a variety of auditing and tax assignments during their first years of employment.  The firm encourages the development of an individual's special interests and skills, but also stresses the importance of gaining a broad experience base for becoming a well-rounded professional.  Alliance’s offices occupy the third floor of the Denali Financial Center in downtown Fairbanks.

Our practice serves a full range of Alaskan enterprises including construction contractors, retailers, transportation companies, nonprofit organizations, utilities, school districts, municipalities and corporations established under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act.  Our tax client base encompasses a variety of entity types including corporations, partnerships, trusts and estates, nonprofit organizations, and individuals.  Our diverse client base provides valuable opportunities for new professional staff members and student interns to gain experience in many business and accounting environments while developing a greater understanding of their interrelationships within the local, state and international economies.

Alliance is committed to a strong training and professional education program.  In addition to providing extensive audit and tax online libraries and research tools, the firm ensures that each professional staff member receives a minimum of forty hours of continuing professional education each year.  As a general rule, achieving status as a Certified Public Accountant is one of the primary initial obligations of professional staff members. Our firm desires that you become a CPA as soon as possible after being employed. To assist in this regard the firm provides assistance in obtaining self-study materials for the CPA examination and pays all costs associated with the registration and sitting for each section of the CPA exam, as well as all licensing fees.

Our firm utilizes an electronic auditing, accounting and tax preparation environment including fully automated engagement and write-up accounting and auditing software.  We subscribe to web-based research products on a wide variety of subjects including extensive taxation resources, attestation and accounting technical services and special organization references such as for governments and nonprofit entities.  Staff members are expected to be comfortable with common programs such as Outlook, Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and QuickBooks, and to be able to learn our specialized software applications quickly.

Our office is composed of between 20 and 24 people depending on the time of year.  They include three partners, Kara Moore, Kathleen Thompson, and Gary Corrick; our senior consultants, Gerald Haugeberg, James Dieringer, Jr. and Garry Hutchison; 3 to 4 people in supervisory roles; 6 to 10 staff accountants and 4 members of our support staff.

Questions about our firm can be directed to Alliance CPAs LLC, 119 North Cushman Street, Suite 300, Fairbanks, Alaska 99701; telephone (907) 456-7762; and via e-mail at kmoore@alliancecpaak.com.
